The Story of Mara

It all begins twenty years ago as Boric of Crydee, the future Lord of Crydee, joins Prince’s Enron’s envoy to the Elven Kingdom. Boric and Enron grew up together in a time of the Kingdom's prosperity and growth. They were friends beyond their roles and knew that their future’s held daunting roles of leadership.

Boric was enchanted with the Elven Kingdom, built upon the trees it simply seemed to float in the air. The elven people were welcoming to their human guests and found them charming in their short lives and small worries. At one of the many grand dinners, Boric is sitting beside Laurilie, an elven princess. She is beauty and grace and though she appeared to be the same age as Boric she might have been much older. There was a connection between them, Boric had never felt this way before.

Though betrothed to Anne of Krondor, he couldn’t help himself from indulging in this beautiful elven woman. They talked for many hours and fell deeply into passion with each other. Boric even considered giving up his Lordship and his responsibilities to stay and feel this at peace. But relationships between humans and elves are always doomed, the length of lifetimes will be felt as time goes on and Laurilie knows that she follies with his human heart.

In the morning she goes to tell him that she cannot continue this any longer, she finds him gone, a rushed note in his quarters.

“My father is ill, they say he won’t hold much longer. This time I have spent with you has changed me, I will return for you.”

Laurilie’s heart contracts but she tells herself that humans are impulsive and it’s likely that he doesn’t even know if what he says will hold the test of time. She tells herself she will wait three months and if he hasn’t returned she will continue her life as before.

Three Months Pass

Laurilie finds herself ill in the mornings, tired all the time, and yet joyful. She is pregnant. But she is worried, she loves her people but she knows how they feel about humans, and half-humans aren’t welcome in the Kingdom beyond servant roles for the royal family. She doesn't want her child raised to become a servant.

She decides to go to Boric to talk to him of what has occurred, she doesn’t need him to support her, but she wants him to know the truth. She packs her belongings and travels to Crydee, leaving her family a note that she was going to explore the elven forests and meditate.

Arriving in Crydee she seeks an audience with Boric, she is rebuffed at first for he is Lord Boric now and she will need to partition for conference. Biting her lip in distress she considers her options, she leaves him a note hoping he will respond quickly.

Lord Boric’s advisor Thomas finds her at a local inn and invites her to dine at the castle that evening with the Lord & his wife Lady Anne. Laurilie feels her heart shrivel inside her but knows that this must be done.

The dinner is uncomfortable at best, elves are forthright in nature and Laurilie sees no point in pretending that something is not going on. She asks if the three of them can speak privately. Boric, seeing her drawn she looks agrees. She shares with Lord Boric and Lady Anne that she is pregnant with Boric’s child. Lady Anne looks hurt and distraught, while Lord Boric looks flabbergasted at this turn of events.

Lady Anne recovers first. She turns to Laurilie and tells her that she is having trouble conceiving but that her child, a half-elf, can never sit on the seat of Crydee. Laurilie is horrified, she doesn’t want that, she explains that half-elves cannot be raised in the Elven Kingdom and was hoping that Lord Boric would offer reassurance.

Lord Boric finally joins the conversation, while he cannot acknowledge the child, he can offer her safety within the walls of the castle. And he can offer her mother a job in the castle guard. Keeping them both safe and close but unable to do more than that. Laurilie is saddened by his offer but understands the weight of ruling. She accepts.

Ten Years Pass

After ten years of trying, Lady Anne is finally about to give birth to the heir of Crydee. The townspeople are overjoyed. Lord & Lady are beloved by the people of Crydee. With great joy comes great tragedy for the Lady did give birth to a beautiful son, Lyam of Crydee. But it was as though this was the only gift she could bestow upon her husband as his birth took her life.

Mara was ten at this time and felt sadness at the loss of such a great lady. Her mother, now Captain of the Guard, drank heavily during this period, something that she had never done before.

Two Years Pass

Mara is now twelve and roaming both the lands beyond the castle and the castle itself. She goes in places she isn’t meant, and is constantly being saved from scrapes with the local children who know her slightly pointed ears mark her differently.

Heading to the edge of the castle to borrow some apples for her sweet tooth, she spies a small child crawling out from under a hedge. He dusts off his knees and stares at her openly.

“Elf?” he askes in a clumsy tone.

She grimaced, “Brat?” she responds. His shock at being referred to so suddenly alightens Mara to whom this is. Feeling no dilemma in pointing out the child’s faults she simply points at him and says, “Are you escaping?”

“Yes” he replies grinning smugly at his genius.

A friendship was formed that day, something of a sibling, something of a protector. Mara and Lyam were bonded in ways they couldn’t even understand and yet over the next few years you couldn’t say who was getting who into more trouble.

Eight Years Pass

A year ago at the age of nineteen Mara joined the Castle Guard, she had no particular inclination to anything but her mother insisted she was doing something worthwhile to support the town. A natural at shooting a bow and years of hunting had done her well. She actually enjoyed the discipline of the yard, but she never let her mother know that.

On duty in the keep on day, Mara hears raised voices and races to find out if this would be her first chance to prove her worth to the Lord.

“She is twenty years old Boric, what would you like me to tell her?”
“That her father is out there, and that he loves her, and that if he could he would speak to her.”
“Well that should hold her up for all of three minutes before she asks more and wants to know more. She doesn’t want anything from you Boric, she just wants to know who you are.”
“It’s not possible Laurilie, I have loved you and her, you know it to be true but my duty is to Crydee and to Lyam.

Mara slumps against the door in shock. Boric was her father? But why didn’t anyone tell her? Who else knew? Were they all just laughing at her? The bastard child of the Lord.

She runs, and runs, and runs. Her face a stream of tears and heads to the treehouse Lyam and her built in the forests of Crydee. There she can take a moment and process what she just discovered. And how to confront her mother about this betrayal.

Sometime during her tears, she must have drifted off for she awakens to the call to arms from Crydee. Racing down from her location she struggles to find a way back into the castle without being spotted by the attacking Orc horde.
Finally, once the Orcs have been repelled. Mara hears her Captain commanding able bodies for a search party. Lyam is missing.

Unbeknownst to Mara, Lyam had seen her racing off in tears and followed her as soon as he could leave his lessons. Heading to their tree house, he’d never seen her cry. He mustn’t have been paying attention though and the world went black.

After days of searching through the bodies, they finally find Lyam’s cloak squashed and ripped upon a mass of bodies. While they cannot locate a whole body, they pronounce him dead and once again, Crydee has no heir.

Mara is the one to find the cloak, just outside of the forest near their treehouse. It’s her fault he is dead. He died coming to look for her. Her brother. Her brother is dead before she even told him that they were a family.

Ashamed, and broken she flees in the night.

A Year Passes

Sitting at a tavern awaiting the next caravan requiring an escort of mercenaries, she swirls the dregs of ale in her cup.

Heading to the privy she spots a sign "Heroes wanted! Cattle and Sheep disappearing, crops burnt and town folk disappeared". Mara swallows her ale and pulls on her ragged cloak.

Twenty years ago, the realm was plunged into civil war when its regent lay claim to the throne after the direct heirs had died under questionable circumstances. After the Duke was exonerated of all charges, he gained the support of the barons of the realm and was proclaimed Emperor. In choosing a Duke to fill the power vacuum, the newly crowned Emperor began consolidating power, beginning with increasing the military strength at the borders. This is the version of history in common memory.

Morning arises in the tower and Falco appears with a devine breakfast for the party. Mahin in particular looks excitedly at the cheese and bread on offer. The little hobbit grins in pleasure at Mahin's obvious job at the spread. The party tucks in to the feast and questions the hobbit on how he was able to afford such a feast.

"I have been...um....hiring....the bottom floor...for you!" He stammers in reply. Nervously looking around the party. They shake their heads "Falco".

The party decides to use caution and head to the bazaar to pick up supplies before walking into an unknown setting. They walk through the city and smell the spices of life, and their world. The market is packed with goods for sale and the party works along the stalls seeking their goods.

Alena turns to seeking daggers with a rune on upon the blade, the market provides but the cost is too high. Her heart sinks, for she longed to add a paid of blades to her collection.

Alena turns to the party "I think Ezra and Candur should go to the drop off alone. Mahin and I will await you outside, in case anything goes wrong."

The party agrees, they head to a part of town with large houses and wide streets. Streets that are clean of decay and rubbish. The party advances upon the location, large sandstone walls appear before them. The sandstone walls are marked with faces of the wind and the sun. Candur pauses at the wall and recognises symbols of Teamat. Teamat is the goddess of the sea and queen of dragons, she is the creator of monsters.

Mahin turns to Ezra "Here? You are meant to deliver the scrolls here?"

Ezra looks upon the gates "Yes."

Candur pauses again as Ezra asks is he ready to enter the domain of his lords. Candur starts to back away from the gates, shaking his head and saying no over and over again. He runs down the street in fear with the scrolls in his hand.

"I suppose we should follow the man with our loot" Alena says to the others.

They pursue him through the streets as he walks swiftly towards the tower.

"What happened back there!?!?!?" Ezra demands.

"There are dark things in the water" Candur says.

"What is the matter Candur. Are you afraid of something?" Mahin asks with concern in her voice.

Mahin grabs Candur as he tries to pull away and slaps him "What is the matter, you must tell us."

Mahin asks again "Tell us what you know. We need to know why you do not want to do dealings with them."

The party is in turmoil as they weigh the morale obligations of releasing the wrath of the scrolls to those who would use them for harm. Ezra admits that his point of contact is not the final drop point. Alena is furious, hearing that they weren't even going to be meeting the final receivers which bodes poorly for the extra party members.

Candur heads off towards the Temple of Ishta, racing towards it without looking back. Ishta is the god of luck and war, love and peace, her priests look up as Candur ascends the stares. The priests in white robes and gold trims stand around the top of the temple talking.

Mahin catches up "What are you trying to do with these scrolls?"

Candur yells at the top of his voice "The Scrolls of Skelos!"

They look at him curiously but with no sparks of understanding. He pushes past them as he races into the temple and grabs a lowly level priest demanding the high priest. Candur sits down beside the pillar and begins to rock back and forwards as he looks upon the crowd with nervous eyes.

"Our friend is not well" Mahin says.

"I must go see my masters" Ezra looks towards the city.

"What if they kill you for not delivering? Then what?" Mahin asks logically.

Alena walks up to Candur and deftly grabs the scrolls from his grasp. He lunges to grab them back but Alena dodges him. Priests rush to his aid, and due to his raving they treat him like a simpleton. He raves about the gods and their belongings. His agitation increases.

"Please calm my friend, he is unwell" Mahin begs the priest looking concerned at Candurs ravings.

Candur starts rifling through the pages of his notebook and suddenly closes the book.

"Alright. Let's go" Candur starts walking out of the temple, gently patting Alena on the shoulder as he leaves.

"What the hell Candur?!?!" Mahin yells, but he ignores them and continues the path back to the house.

Back at the estate, the guardsman awaits them on the other side of the large gate.

"Hello good sir" Ezra says calmly to the man.

The guard wanders off and returns shortly with a servant.

"Ah, welcome back. You returned. Come in" the servant beckons the party inside.

The large beautiful gardens and the goddess's symbols surround. Though the estate is beautiful, there is signs of disrepair throughout. As they enter the villa, guards surround them as they go into the courtyard. A women lays upon a stuffed couch, awaiting the servants for food and beverages.

"It is good to see your return" she lazily looks upon the party "Bring them what was promised".

"You have caught us at an interesting time, we have another offer for you" her hand lazily reaches for a grape in the nearest servants hand. "My niece disappeared from her chamber, a locked chamber. We need her found. We need her found now. She has been kidnapped."

"May we look through her room?" Ezra asks quietly.

"5,000 gold pieces" Alena states calmly "If you value her life, that is."

"3,000 gold pieces. It is my final offer" she eyes them "and here is your gold."

Alena hands over the scrolls as the guards place the gold in her hand.

"Madam you have been so gracious" Mahin starts "May we see her room?"

The party confers with their hostess as they guide arrives to show them through the house to the room in question. The door sits closed in front of them. The feather bed and perfect tapestries are a sign of the comfort and elegance. A pile of glass lays under the window, the bed covers are thrown back, a beautiful gown lays on the hope chest at the end of her bed.

The servant Drenel, her personal servant confesses that the niece has had several admirers though no romances to speak of. They discuss the her family and the previous night, before her disappearance. She notes that her final brandy lays untouched, and speaks of minor cuts and bruises upon her arms as she dressed her recently, and one long gauge across her back.

The examine the window and the outside courtyard. The glass is inside the window and a jasmine trestle outside upon the wall going down to the meet the courtyard grounds. The house captain arrives and talks about the many cousins in the house and the embarrassing situations they undoubtedly got themselves into. The smell of jasmine of overwhelming.

The smell resonates from the desk and a vial upon it.

"Look at this vial wizard" Mahin demands.

"It's perfume" he says, not even leaving his lazy position against the wall.

"We should get a dog!" Mahin said as though stating the obvious.

The party looks at her and then shake their respective heads.

A guard taps Mahin on the shoulder "I....I...I noticed....I really wanted...I really want her back.....I want to let you know. I was her bodyguard...I accompanied her to The Priests of the Broken Gate a few times....she feigned a casual influence in them when I was there....she never really noticed me.

"Did she visit the Priests often?" Mahin asked.

"Sometimes, but we went to many places...I can tell you! A shopping trip to the Quosabouse two days ago to purchase more gowns, a masked ball at house Taroth two nights ago...there was dancing....I don't know any of the gossip...but no one touched her! And a trip to the Priests yesterday" he finished suddenly.

Candur begins to examine her dresses and while overall they appear normal there are some tears that he sees. He walks over the checks the dress against Mahin to see where the tears would be sitting on the female form. Candur drops the dress and pulls out a magnifying glass as he moves to examine the bar that was upon the door, previously keeping it locked. He then examines the bed and walks back to the window. Gazing at the scenery and seeking answers in the sky.

The party is in the courtyard examining the ground as a Owlier takes to the sky at Candur's word. Owlier looks glorious as her white wings sail through the sky. The party is unable to find any signs of an escape or the victim being whisked away. The shard of glass remains in Ezra's hand, he holds it tightly.

The party bids the reclining mistress goodbye as they exit the estate.

They head in the direction of perfume seller, Careleas is her favourite. They enter the store to find the owner herself appearing to be awaiting them, an older lady with a kind smile. They tell her of the missing young lady, and the older lady says that her taste in jasmine is well overdone and that she has not seen her in over a week now.

"Has anyone else bought this scent recently" Ezra asks.

"Well..I suppose some people..."she trails off nervously.

Ezra's head lifts as Mahin turns to her "My lady, this is extremely important. Please tell us."

"She came here as a cover, to hide from her family to see someone out in the alley for over an hour sometimes" she lowers her voice and looks around. She leads them out the back of the store to the alley way, where the smell of jasmine lingers in the air.

The construction site sits across the alleyway. The party walks towards it and suddenly Mahin looks up to see a pair of red eyes and the scream of an ape echoes through the air.

Kira:

They made it to the boat. Still chased by the beastman, Arcandar turns the boat southward on the river. As the only one who can captain the boat, he is in charge of leading them to safety. The beastmen pursue the party for the next hour, following them along the river, finally they drift away from the group the river leading them to safely.

Mahin stands with Arcandur learning the ways of the river. Alena collapses on the deck after bandaging her wounds and begins her restorative trance. Ezra rests his weary head on the deck and falls instantly into a deep sleep. Mahin and Arcandur discuss the possibility of sailing through the night, and decide stopping for the night to keep the boat and the crew safe.

Alena awakens to tell the rest of the crew to take the time to recover while she takes the first watch. The boat slowly rocks back and forth, all is quiet on the river. Resting the boat on the west side of the river to avoid the beastmen. Alena hears the noise of a large creature throughout the night on the banks. Using her elf ears she notes that the creature is probably 30 metres from her and the party. Later in the night, a breeze picks up during the night, Alena hopes it stays for the next day and the travel.

Arcandur turns to Mahin and says "Weigh the anchor!", Mahin struggles but makes it work.

Arcandur turns to Mahin and says "Pull the sails!", Mahin looks at him with violence in her eyes.

She wrenches at the sail, and somehow manages to fly through the air and land heavily on her backside. Ezra runs to her aid and pulls the sail up and hauls the sail into the air, it fills with wind.

Arcandur gestures to Mahin "To the tiller thief", Mahin rises and races to the tiller to control the boat rather well. Mahin crosses her fingers secretly not wanting to disappoint her teacher. Arcandur pulls out a book and begins the read.

The morning progresses and the party continues down the river. Suddenly the boat snags on something and the boat lurches vertically. Straight away Alena looks to the sky and a see a silvery substance crossing above the boat and knocking against the mast. The substance appears to be silvery strands that is wrapped around a moving figure. Mahin climbs the mask to dislodge the silvery strands attached to the boat, trying to free the party. Showing her strengths she leaps and bounds to the top and sees that the strand is thick and dense, appearing to be a spider web but on a much greater scale.

The wriggling creature continues to move and Mahin yells down "I'm going to cut the web".

Alena looks at the creature, weighing up the chance of survival versus her mission. Mahin's internal conflict flashes in her. Ezra knows that this isn't anything to do with his mission and dismisses saving the humanoid.

Mahin isn't sure if she will be able to dismantle the web with her rapier. She begins trying to hack at the web but to no avail. Alena continues to search for a cause of the web but cannot see a culprit. Mahin places her hand against the web and removes it, noticing the sticky residue left behind. The current from the river begins to turn the boat.

Alena yells at Mahin "Get to the tiller".

And she begins to climb, cumbersome with her swords. Getting to the top she slices at the web, it breaks away. The anchor stops them as the river starts to move them on. Mahin tries to tie the strand to the mast to create line to the wiggling creature, alone it would be impossible for her but Ezra jumps in to help.

Mahin begins to walk along the rope, moving slowly the sticky substance holding her normal acrobatics to a stop. She tries to lift her foot and stumbles, almost falling into the water, at the last moment she saves herself. Mahin lowers herself down and moves much slower towards to bulk of the web. Ezra secures the line on the mast and watches as the thief climbs closer to the wiggling shape.

She edges ever closer to the wriggling creature, approaching it cautiously. The web gets stickier and stickier as she approaches the shape, her hand gets stuck. "Shit" she mutters.

Alena and Ezra exchange a glance, both on their own path they are unsure that this is the wisest course of action. Ezra goes to Arcandur, who is still reading his book, and grabs the crossbow and bolts from beside him "Thanks for the help."

Arcandur glances up "Hmmmmm" he mutters and continues to read.

Mahin arrives at the creature and hears the sounds of a muffled voice. Mahin slices at the web and cuts loose a chunk that is hiding the face. Unveiling a dark skin human gazing at her with wonder and with a tortured cry "Help me".

Ezra yells out to Mahin "What is the matter?"

Mahin yells back "There is a human trapped!"

Erza turns to Alena and looks back at Mahin "Hurry! This does not bode well for us".

Mahin continues to hack at the web surrounding the human body. A slow and tortuous process. Suddenly the trapped human moves out of her grip as she falls into the water. She tries to swim back to the boat but is pushes downstream with the tide. She turns and drags herself to the bank.

Ezra rushes to Arcandur and demands flammable items to send a crossbow into the web and save both the trapped human and Mahin. Arcandur tells him he has nothing and Ezra grabs him and turns him towards Mahin. "You will help us" Ezra demands.

Arcandur raises slowly and looks out at the water "Who will pull up the anchor?"

Ezra races to the anchor and Arcandur begins to the slow process to get them closer to save Mahin from her noble cause. Mahin tries to hide amongst the scrub as she awaits her rescue. Using all her skills she melds into the shadows.

The boat comes around as the trapped man continues to scream for help. Arcandur's bored look infuriates Alena as she grabs what Ezra needs from him. The move towards Mahin and Alena yells at them to stop. Ezra unties the web from the mast and throws it into the water. Alena tries to throw the rope and fails, it takes two times for her to reach the bank.

Mahin leaps for it. Grabbing it in her hand breathing in a sigh of relief. Ezra prepares to fire as Mahin looks on ready to try to grab the trapped man as he falls. Erza misses once, twice and three times. The crossbow is not his instrument, yet the next bolt flies true and beds itself into the tree at the base of the web, the fire licking the web. Slowly is begins to burn. Faster and faster, collapsing the web as it crawls along towards the screaming man.

Mahin races into the water as he falls 15ft and begins to drown. Mahin tries to move towards him but this is not her skill. Ezra puts down his crossbow and readies him self to pull them in. Mahin continues to search and finally sees him. Moving towards him she finally reaches the trapped human. Dragging him to the surface, Mahin wraps the rope around him.

Alena and Ezra begin pulling the pair towards the boat, and finally the pair are on board. The trapped man lies prone on the deck. Alena pulls the anchor up and yells at Arcandur "Let's move wizard!"

Arcandur looks at Mahin "On the tiller you lazy sailor" and goes back to his book.

Mahin, tired and worn, wanders to the tiller and begins to guide them out of the danger. Ezra unties the trapped man and he thanks them for saving him. Jothrer tells them how he came to be trapped by the creature as he was upon the mast of his sailing adventure the night before. He tells them of this journey to Traders Landing, and they tell him of the beastmen overrunning the town. He shakes his head and offers to help them through sailing.

He continues to advise them on sailing and removes Arcandur from his position of Captain. Mahin sits beside him and offers him cheese, his face splits into a grin. Alena looks away from their obvious joy at the simple pleasures and moves to the front of the boat to be alone.

The day continues on and they continue to travel down to the river. After a few more hours, the see smoke off into the distance. Quodeth. The party begins to get excited about seeing civilisation again. Mahin is grateful to have more than cheese. The river widens as they move towards their destination.

The smells and the noises of the city begin to intoxicate their senses. For some it is the thought of the coming money. For some it is the thought of continuing on their adventure. For others it's more, the chance for revenge.

Ezra turns to them "To claim our finders fee we must make contact with my people. If you come with me we can make the exchange."

Arcandur states "Well you are going to have to pull into StoneQuay. And then we can do whatever we need to collect the fee."

As they approach StoneQuay the see a great vessel, manned by many men, and the flag of Marg waving from the mask. Suddenly they see the slavers throw a body from the boat, Alena slams her sword into the deck. The party looks at her as she turns away from them. The boat pulls into the pier and as he does a man comes up to them and begins signalling "Welcome to Quodeth, it is three gold per night".

Alena questions the over priced port fee and suddenly Jothrer leaps forward and says "Friend! It is good to see you!"

The port fee is reduced to one gold and the party make their way from the harbour master. Jothrer approaches Mahin and takes her hand and kisses it, proclaiming his admiration and love for her beauty. They send him on his way to rest at the Fishers Panties while they make the exchange.

They turn to Ezra and question him about going to his contacts, he advises them to come with him. They head towards the Palace Quarter, and they accompany him.

On the way they stop at the tower that they claimed in the last adventure in Quodeth. The tower looms above them, a huge edifice of stone and strength. The reach the door and enter, calling for the halfling they left in charge. The tower is clean and smells of warm bread and hot soup. The floor is swept clean and a fire burns in the grate. Fralco is cleaning the room.

"Welcome my friends! Where are your others?" He asked excited to see them "Do you wish for food good friends?"

Mahin expresses her excitement through a loud grumble of the stomach. He serves them a delicious meal as he questions them on their journey and new companion. They tell him of the tragedy and what has befallen them. They ask to stay the night and feast and drink together, celebrate being alive.

Fralco leaves the room and returns with jugs of mead, the party lets up a cheer. A night of joy amongst many of pain. A night of rest for them all.

Ezra heads out to advise his contact of his return.

The party rests to regain their strength after the battle. The sounds of horns rumble in the distance, somewhere between the party and the boat. Alena awaits the party to rest and knows that this is another journey home before she can begin the next part of her journey.

Once they wake, they begin to move towards the south. Along their track their discover a dilapidated road. Alena leads the way, hesitant to take such an obvious path however with their inability to see in the dark this is an easier path for the party. The road suddenly breaks into a fork, one road leads to a hill in the distance, the other the south. The party chooses the left fork and continues south.

The horn sounds. Alena raises her head, the sound is closer, much closer. And directly between them and the ship.

"Shit" she mutters "Stay quiet, stay alert".

They decide to wait for dawn to break across the horizon, letting the others in the party without the gift of sight a chance to see much clearer. Finally, the sun breaks over the hills and they begin to travel again. Avoiding the road but staying close enough to see the path in front of them, this choice slows them down. They see the path veer off to the east, to where the beastman horn sounds through the jungle.

"I want more than cheese, let us continue" Mahin says loudly.

After a discussion, they kept pushing south. Suddenly the horn sounds behind them. Alena holds up a hand to draw the party to a halt.

"They are out our camp" Alena states "It is time to move".

"Let us lay a false path" Ezra says. Mahin shakes her head.

By the time they spend ten minutes covering the ball bearings they have laid in wait for the chasing beastmen. The reach the end of the path to the start of the jungle. A dense thick jungle. The party asks of Candur to allow Owlier to view the jungle and see what lies before them. The owl sees much with it's great vision. The owl can see the river, lying three miles ahead of them. The party enters another jungle, heading south.

The horn blows again, closer this time. The party has no idea if there trap will work. They keep travelling south, knowing that the beastmen follow to kill them. The horn sounds again, the party races forward to the end of the jungle. Candur races forward in the hopes to ready the boat for dismemberment before the collision with the beastmen.

The wind blows to the south, Ezra takes a bottle of oil from Mahin. Alena turns to see him lighting the oil on fire and the jungle begins to burn. The flames mark where they were. Alena is not impressed with this strange man. He does not think beyond himself. Ahead of the party Candur uses Owlier to lead his way south. Owlier sends a pang of alert to Candur, showing him a road lying ahead. Owlier heads toward the road, and sees a fallen tree laying across the way. Owlier sees shapes lying in wait at the fallen tree. Candur turns around as Owlier shows him the vision of the smoke billowing from the trees.

Horns sound. Horns from the north. Horns from the south. Time is running short for the party. Candur views the world through Owlier and begins to make decisions about what he can do to assist the party moving beyond this moment and living to see the next. The party races to Candur's location, not knowing what he was trying to achieve ahead of them. Candur begins to move towards the road, pausing he pulls out a piece of chalk and draws on a tree. An arrow and a skull. Another arrow and an owl. He can only hope the party sees the warning.

The party races forward to the orchestra of horns. South, moving south. Alena drags the party through the jungle, seeing nothing but more foliage waiting them. Candur continues to move stealthy away from the attackers lying in wait. Alena stumbles upon the road, stopping suddenly. In the distance she sees a fallen log across the road. Deducing something amiss, she cautions the party to be quiet as she analyses the path ahead of them.

Alena asks Mahin to view what is ahead of them, Mahin nods and begins to move forward. As she goes move forward, a loud noise emanates from the ground beneath her. A branch cracks under her foot. The party's chance for stealth is gone. Mahin looks up, she spots beastman awaiting them. They appear to be uncaring about their watching duties. Ezra moves stealthy to the side of the road and begins flanking the tree. Mahin sees the beastmen point towards Alena advancing in the distance.

Ezra suddenly spots the awaiting trap. Mahin readies her bow to fire sneakily at the group lying in wait, the shot misses and flies past a beastmens head. The beastmen look around to see where the arrow came from. Alena hears the noise and arms herself for what may be ahead. Mahin withdraws deeper into the jungle and tries to sneak past them, hoping to avoid their gaze. The beastmen begin bellowing to what Mahin can assume is more comrades hidden in the jungle. More beastmen appear. One of them larger then all the others, carrying javelins. The day looks dark for the party.

The horns sounds behind them from the north. Slowed by the fire, but advancing none the less.

Candur hears the noises coming from where he just came from. He pauses and makes a decision about what to do next. Alena moves forward stealthy, yet a twig breaks under her foot and alerts the guards to her presence. They begin advancing on her. She knows that she approaches the end, yet she readies for battle. Ezra see their approach, mutters words under his breath and waves his hand towards the advancing beastmen. Suddenly a beastmen falls asleep, and another, and another. Sleeping soundly like they had laid down in their own beds. Roars of displeasure sound from the remaining beastmen.

Mahin sneaks towards the beastmen, aiming to flank them. Slowly, ever so slowly. Alena moves forward to slicing the throats of the sleeping beastmen. Two pay the price for their cruelty, for their trap. The beastmen who are still awake rush to take Alena down, as a javelin is fired from the giant beastman. The javelin flies through the air and scrapes the leather armour of her arm, leaving no mark. Alena watched the ark and fall of the javelin, making peace with her god.

Ezra whispers again under his breath and waves his arm towards the advancing beastmen, one of them collapses in sleep. Mahin moves ever closer to her victim, slowly making not a single sound. Alena slits the throats of two more sleeping beastmen, not regretting their deaths for a moment. It is the jungle life, kill or be killed. A javelin connects with her side, slicing through her armour and knocking the breath from her lungs. The beastman closest lifts his stone axe to take a slice of her skin for the deaths she has done to his people. Taking another wound, she understands that this is the price that must be paid.

Ezra whispers once more, and the final beastman falls to the ground, snoring peacefully. Mahin flanks the giant beastman, sneaking down behind him. She slashes with her rapier, driving it into this achilles tendon. His skin is armour in itself and protects him from harm. He roars in annoyance, more than pain. Alena slices the final throat of the beastmen and cleans her blade. Looking at the giant beastman in front of her, she sees him draw a club and start to attack Mahin who is under his feet.

Mahin stumbles backward, moving away from the giant beastman. He swings his club close to her and connects smashing into her side and leaving her wounded and raw. A scream of pain echoes throughout the jungle. The club comes back around again. From the distance, Candur clambers up a tree and seeks a vantage point to view what is happening. Yet doesn't move to swiftly.

Ezra moves forward stealthy to advance upon the giant beastman attacking the rogue. Alena begins firing arrows at the giant beastman to draw his attention away. Mahin races away from the giant, as he continues to swing his club at her. Injured and in pain, she moves so fast that you couldn't know that she was in such a state. The giant beastman hurls a javelin at Mahin, but misses her.

Ezra fires a word at the giant beastman. The word filled with power. Power of the elves. The horns are closer from the north. They are running out of time. The word hits the giant beastman and singes him, causing him to roar in pain. Again, in annoyance he glances at the wound as his eyes blaze with anger. Mahin fires her bow at the beastman and lands the arrow into this body. The arrow plants itself inside of this skin, causing him to flinch in pain. Alena rushes forward firing arrows at the giant beastman.

The beastman hurls another javelin at Alena, yet misses as she dodges to the side. Ezra fires another word of power at the beastman. The beastman's arm bursts into flame and he yells in rage and pain. Mahin fires an arrow and misses. Alena leaps over the log and connects with the beast as she slices his stomach, his insides begin leaking out. He grabs his club and connects smashing her arm to pieces. She can barely hold her sword. Ezra fires a word of power, connecting with his neck bursting into flame. He desperately tries to put out the flames.

Mahin tries to fire another arrow, missing the target. Alena slices into this body, hoping to kill him, yet he remains standing. He smashes his club into her, destroying what is left of her arm. Part of her brain acknowledges this pain, yet knows she cannot fall. Ezra casts his final word of power, entering his body through the wound Alena carved into his stomach, he begins to burn from the inside as he collapses on the ground. Finally dead.

The party races towards the river, towards the sound of the water. They race towards to the city of trading. The one building in the town burns, two ships are in the harbour, one sunken and one afloat. Alena and Mahin exchange a glance. Ezra takes them towards his boat, they board and look for Candur. They suddenly see Candur dash towards the south, away from them. A horde of beastmen emerge from the jungle, three hundred of them. They throw the lines from the boat. They begin to drift towards the middle of the river.

Candur reaches Dunk's boat and casts off, heading to the bow. The current is strong enough to pull the boat into the river. The whole party is safe from the beastmen. On separate boats, but safe. They see the remains of the town being destroyed. Candur pulls alongside the boat, and takes the party on board.

They see the path veer off to the east, to where the beastman horn sounds through the jungle.

The party is interrupted from their rest as a voice echoes through the clearing.

"Help" the voice screams in elvish. Immediately Alena springs from her trance at the language of her people. Gaze seeking south she sees two figures running directly towards the party. Behind the beastmen rush up to attack their quarry. As the two figures get closer to the clearing the beastmen veer off into the ruins. One of the figures dashes off into the bush as the other wanders into camp looking dazed and gaunt.

Alena grabs his neck and slams him to the ground as he advances. Behind her she hears the arrival of the beastmen. Arcanda's crossbow fires into the body of the closest beastmen but it appears unfazed. Dropping the gaunt dazed body, Alena rushes the beastmen and swings wildly one of her blades connecting to its body. Mahin uses her short bow to pierce the skin of the beastmen.

Suddenly from the south more beastmen arrive to attack the gaunt body that was laying upon the ground. For a moment Alena felt shame at leaving one of her own in such trouble. Though she knew that one did not have a face such as that without a cost. A magic cost. The gaunt figure starts to channel. His instrument ripples shock waves through the camp as his sweeps his arm wide and bellow creating a large thunderclap sound which throws the beastmen back.
Ezra casting from the secret place inside his soul casts a magic spell which puts the the beastmen attacking Leolinel to sleep. As this happens Alena races over to a beastmen hiding behind a boulder to the north. She slashes at his face, and in turn he smashes her with his club.

To the south Leolinel is attacked by the second beastmen who was approaching him, smashing him with a massive amount of damage and leaving him injured. Mahin tries to help by shooting her arrow but leaves stop her progress and she is unable to connect. Arcandur moves to get a clear view of the beastmen and shoots his crossbow across the clearing. The bolt solidly hits the beastmen in the stomach and the beastmen flinches in pain as his guttural roar fills air.

Leolinel attacks the sleeping beastmen, choosing to eliminate an easy target however out of nowhere Ezra backstabs the attacking beastmen. Black blood seeps from the wound. Alena fighting her own battle as she slashes the beast again. He responds by trying to swing his massive club across her elven hair but misses. Leolinel is swung at again and whilst one misses, one connects. Lightly damaged from the blow, he ducks out of danger.

Mahin aims with her bow. Lines up her shot. And impales the beastman straight in the throat as he falls to the ground unmoving. Blood gurgling from his mouth. Arcandur fires his crossbow at the beastman as Alena is fighting with her sword a bolt impales him in the eye. He collapses on the ground. Defeated. Alena wipes the blood from her face and says "Wizard, next time without the blood covering would be appreciated."

Leolinel takes aim at the beastmen attacking him. Smacking at his chest and opening up a wide gash on his chest. Ezra takes advantage of the beastmen with a quick stab of his rapier through this back and leaving him dead upon the ground of the clearing. Leolinel and Ezra take turns stabbing the beastmen asleep until blood covers the leaves of the clearing. The begin to pick apart the bodies like the scavengers they are.

Alena wipes down her sword and looks upon the the invaders of their camp. Ezra mimics the movement and meets her gaze.

"I hope we are friends" Ezra asked calmly.

"Well, we only just met. We aren't friends yet" Mahin replies cautiously.

"What are you doing out here?" Mahin asks.

"My employers want me to get something and is willing to pay a lot of money for it" Ezra looks shiftily around.

"Quick. We need to talk" Mahin whispers to the party "I'm worried. They are here for the same goal as us."

"Well worst case scenario Alena kills them or best case scenario Alena kills them" Arcandur says casually.

"We use them" Mahin says, the rogue in her showing.

"We need to know, what exactly are you looking for? Because we could collaborate here" Mahin looks at Ezra.

"My employers have offered my 2,000 gold pieces to retrieve the item, and I am happy to share. Can I put my hands down now?" Ezra asks.

"Yes" Mahin answers "We can work together. Let us shake on it".

They shake hands and the agreement is formed. They will work together and retrieve the item. Whatever happens after that, would happen. As they all returned to the camp fire, they notice that Leolinel looks even more gaunt in the light. Ezra explains that he doesn't know him, they have spent 5 days working together due to their business arrangement. Mahin offers Arcandur's services to provide a comfort for the drugged elf.

Alena cannot bring herself to look at the elf. Another elf taken by Mothers Milk. Arcandur mutters under his breath. Noting with disgust that there is nothing he can do for the drug rattled elf. He explains to Ezra that he cannot help him. He needs another fix. Another fix of the drug that is killing him. Ezra looks uncomfortable. He doesn't know this elf. Only that his employer forced them together.

Ezra explains again that he dose not want to die, he would rather work together to achieve the goal. The goal of retrieving the item in question. Alena resumes her trance. As the strongest fighter she needs the rest. The rested the night away and recovered from the attack of the beastmen. Again. The bard begins to play. Slowly his music creeps into their souls. Healing them in a way they haven't been healed since they began this long journey.

The morning comes, the cold night air is replaced as the heat of the jungle begins to creep into the clearing. Mosquitoes may have taken a few bites, but as a price to pay it was small. They gather their belongings and walk towards the entrance of the ruins. The party takes a deep breath. As the original members know what lies before them and the new members are still shaken from all that has already occurred.

They mount the stairs and discover the rotting body of the witchdoctor awaits them. Ezra advances forward into the entrance hall, cautiously moving forwards. He approaches the corpse. Arcandur looks horrified as he smells the body. Mahin explains that we have examined the bone dust coffins awaiting them in the entrance hall. Ezra peers down the corridor. Alena strides forward confidently knowing that this chamber is empty of the living and now filled with the dead. Leolinel and Ezra continue to walk around the chamber, hoping to find something that the earlier party had missed.

Ezra moves into the throne room which is filled with glittering jewels and gems. The mummy sits upon the thrones covered in gold. The trickling gold upon his body is awaiting the hands of the thieves and rogues of the world. Mahin cannot help her eyes from flashing gold at the sight of so much wealth waiting to be plucked. Ezra moves on from the room. Though it is as described, he seeks more information. Mahin recalls the terror of the chambers and the torment that they survived.

"The snake" she shudders recalling the sensation of being swallowed whole.

Ezra and Mahin discuss the likelihood of the mummy being dead. Ezra tells the tale of Yogrum, the trader who was gravely injured from taking the gold of the mummy. Mahin explains that while we did not meet him, we were following his trail across the world. The Priests of Set. They kept appearing in the tales.

"Thus far, I've managed to avoid Priests of Set" Ezra says.

Mahin dashes off into the throne room. She climbs upon the throne and caresses the gold. "My precious".

Kira:

Alena started heading into the forest at dusk the party, her intent on locating the riches therein. She quickly located the trail of the priests of Set and followed them relentlessly. Jorta was following but not looking well. The affects of the yellow lotus still bleeding her dreams into reality. After hours of walking she found some rocky ground where the tracks seemed to disappear. The party hunted for as long as they could spare for the tracks but could not find the them again. They continued forging a path north through the forest. During the dark march the yellow lotus takes a hold of Jorta and she wanders away from the party thinking she is cheating Lord Cyrill. A distressed Lord Cyrill alerts Dunk who thinks he can quickly bring her back. Unfortunately for him she is a lot stronger than she looks and her passion for the squirrel much greater. The party becomes separated.

Alena, Maheen and Arcandur are tirelessly trying to track down the trail of the priests and don't notice the others are missing for hours. When they do it is around 3am and the party are exhausted. They also notice the sounds of horns in the distance. They decide to sleep for a few hours in a tree and hope to locate the missing members the next day.

The party awakes at dawn and begins marching north again and stumble upon an old road. While walking upon this they hear the horns again. Arcan uses his powers to divine what is coming and is very afraid. He grabs the other party members and tells them to run!! They do. They run hard and fast. Soon ape like men appear on the road behind them chasing them down.

The party runs into a vine-covered stone ruin not far from the old road just as the four beastmen in the war party overtake them. The structure has no roof, but the walls look to be about two feet thick, and still stand about 10 feet
tall. There are several old embrasures choked with vines looking out toward the road. The embrasures are awkwardly high for humans, at least 5 feet above the ground. Suddenly a huge apeman emerges from the treeline and hurls a primitive bolas. The crude rock and vine weapon spins around Arcandur legs and he drops hard to the ground. Three more apemen charge into view and sprint forward.

Alena spins and draws her swords, rushing forward to protect the downed companion. The beastmen are on her. She fights furiously her swords cutting into their thick fur and corded muscles but she is not fast enough to avoid their blows though as they begin raining down on her. Arcandur also is struck with a club. Maheen remains too far away to be hit.

Maheen draws her bow and fires at the creatures while Arcan is unable to free his legs, he unhooks his crossbow and shoots into the side of a creature that seems to ignore his wound through battle frenzy. The three realise they are fighting a losing battle as the alpha wades in. Alena takes a heavy blow and is crushed back by the creature's giant obsidian spiked club. Together she and Maheen focus their might and manage to down one of the lesser apes while the other two and the alpha surround the doomed and trapped Atlantean.

In desperation, Arcandur plucks out a small packet of clear crystals and slams it on the ground next to him. A thunderous force explodes outwards around him, engulfing everyone. In a cloud of dead leaves and dirt, everyone is hurled backwards. Through some sort of sixth sense Maheen twists under a fallen log, shielding her from the force, to quickly rise unhurt. Two of the apemen lie still, their necks and limbs twisted grotesquely. Alena pulls herself unsteadily to her feet, a trickle of blood from her nose as her eyes stare dazedly. The alpha impossibly has remained on his feet, a furrow in the ground before him where his bestial hand had torn at the ground.

With a terrifying roar the alpha launches himself forward, his club a blurred circle. Alena attempts to clumsily party, but the club smashes through her defense and crushes her to the ground where she lays gasping before falling still.

Maheen manages to get a shot off at the huge hulking creature but it ignores the wound as if it was nothing. It's black eyes locked on her and its maw opened, its teeth bared in a horrific rictus grin. It's chest puffs out and it begins to hoot and snarl, its lip curled back. A wheezing, shaking roar can be heard in an awful parody of bestial laughter. It begins to lurch forward before sliding to the ground, hooting and wheezing, its limbs thrashing on the ground.

Arcandur draws a dagger and saws through the binding vines. Rising unsteadily, he casts a worried look at the fallen elf before approaching the thrashing beastman, dagger held uncertainly in his hand. Maheen appears at his side and they pause, before Maheen turns urgently and says "the yellow dust"! Arcandur looks at her, his eyes widen before a grim determination settles on him.

The alpha stares up at the sky in primordial fear as Arcandur walks over to it, takes his back pack off and starts to rifle through it. He pulls out a small bag full of some yellow powder that he decided to take off of the priest’s of Set boat. He begins to sprinkle it down over the inhaling laughing maw of the creature. It has no choice but to breathe in the powder. More and more of it is poured onto its face. Its eyes begin to water and go blood shot. Soon its nose is dribbling yellow mucus, and then blood. It continues laughing. Laughing with its whole body except its eyes. Its eyes filled with fear… and then death.

Maheen and Arcandur stabilise Alena and then put her over Arcandur’s shoulder as they carry her away from what is left of the huge creatures. They walk west for about an hour until they find a clearing at the base of a hill and prop Alena under a tree to rest.

Firelight flickered softly across damp leaves and bare stone. Set in the base of an earthen knell, nestled between thick twisting roots of giant thick canopied jungle trees, and worn blocks of a cast down ruined wall, the fire sputtered and hissed.

The soft glow from the camp didn't even reach the edge of the knell before it was smothered by a blanket of darkness. Far above through tiny gaps stars sparkled in the night sky while lower down white moths and glowing beetles fluttered over the three figures around the fire.

A tall man wrapped in a leather cloak was propped against a large twisting tree root between the fire and a small shuttered lantern. The light played across a bundle that he leaned over, his dark eyes focused intently on something that he worried at with a sharp pointed dagger. Before him laid out on ruled out cloth were several small vials of liquid and pouches with a small mortar and pestle in the centre. An acrid scent still lingered in the air, mixing with the earthy small of rotting wood and damp.

Across the fire, a slender woman lounged against a sprawled mass of cloak, bedroll and carefully placed silks. Her luxurious dark hair cascaded over leather clad shoulders as she drifted her bored gaze across the knell. Two silver coins flashed in her left hand, dancing amongst her fingers. Every now and then, the coins would meet and clink together, and she would wince slightly but wouldn't stop the movement, almost as if she wasn't even aware of the coins in her hand.

To her right and up higher, an lithe figure was curled amongst a mass of roots and long hanging vines. The firelight shone lightly across her delicate face and the twin hilts that stood above her shoulders. Her eyes were closed with a serene expression across her ageless face as though she was dreaming in a still sleep.

The stilled pose fooled neither of her companions, one who's cunning eyes sparkled beneath heavy lashes and revealed little of how much she actually saw and the other whose intense gaze hungrily devoured tiny details when they occasionally flickered up from the bundle of leather and bronze.

Around them, the jungle was alive with crickets and the chirps and croaks of frogs. Hoots and cries echoed from high in distant trees punctuated by occasional yipping barks or coughing abrupt roars.
At one point, a far away strangled scream shattered the noises, the cry desperate and shrill echoed across the valley before abruptly ending and a pall of silence covered everything. The two around the fire sat up and peered into the darkness before looking back to the figure in the above them. She was leaning forward, a blade having materialised in her hand as her eyes flashed in the firelight.

Gradually the crickets started, their chirps hesitant before building back and slowly the other creatures joined in. Only then did the elf relax, eyes closing but blade still resting reassuringly in her hand. The others slumped wearily back.

As the fire slowly died down, there was a crunching noise followed by a triumphant chuckle, the man held up a leather wrapped bracer with a spine of burnished bronze. Turning it, a faint gurgling sound could be heard that faded after a short moment. Picking up the bracers twin, he started working a point, pausing to refer to the first, before with a twist, another crunching noise and a gurgle as some strange liquid was freed from within.

Holding the pair up to his expectant companions, he said in a soft voice "capillary fed chambers with a quicksilver reservoir, tundra wolf leather padding and a hardened bronze spine". Running his finger along the metal he continued " the metal will catch and throw off most blades swung lazily, but the cunning part is the metal waters within". Leaning forward, he tapped different spots "twist like so and the waters move suddenly, lending weight and speed. They won't add to your blade work, one arm will fight the other. But combined and you can move faster, maybe duck the club of the maddened ape monster".

He stopped turning the bracers and his shoulders seemed to slump, staring into the metal, his gaze grew distant and his face was tinged with sadness. His voice dropped to a murmur that barely carried " these are old works... their time is lost as dreams amongst the ash...". He fell to silence, and only the flickering light from the dimming fire stirred amongst the stilled camp.

The elf opened an eye lazily. "Wizard. I seek to claim what you offer" she unfurls her legs from their position and gazes down at him. "I understand the compulsion to protect the beauty and give her the prize you have kept hidden since the tower, but I am the one who almost died trying to save us".

She looks at the fire, her eyes appear to be picturing a different scene, her mind is gone from this place, she is in pain. "I need them" she says it quietly.

The wizard looks up and says "You cannot have them - for you wear armour".
